Duchossois Family Gifts $100 Million To University Of Chicago

Duchossois family, a Chicago-area family has gifted $100 million in order to establish an institute at a medical center which seeks to boost the efforts to improve health and also prevent disease by optimizing the body's self defenses.

It is the biggest single gift supporting the University of Chicago Medicine.

The gift, announced on Wednesday, will establish The Duchossois Family Institute at University of Chicago Medicine. The gift is from investment business The Duchossois Group Incorporation's Chairman and CEO Craig Duchossois, his wife, Janet, and also The Duchossois Family Foundation, which is made up of the family members and also the patriarch, Richard L. Duchossois, chairman of the Arlington International Racecourse. In the past, Duchossois family has given smaller amounts to the school.

The wellness center will seek to support the research and also interventions based on how the human immune system, microorganisms and also genetics interact to maintain the health. Craig Duchossois said that the wellness is not just about treating the disease after it takes hold.

"The whole concept of developing something through the microbiome that's proactive, rather than reactive, rang our bell. The opportunity to use students, the opportunity to recruit some of the world's greatest researchers, the opportunity to partnership with all of the resources in the University of Chicago," he said.

In a statement, the University of Chicago president, Robert Zimmer said that, the institute will use "the creativity and skill of university researchers across many fields in bringing new perspectives to medical science."

The family hopes that this research will help in ways to prevent the things like food allergies and also possibly develop antibiotics which could help to lessen the effects of diseases like Alzheimer's.

The medical institute will be fully up and will be in running once they find a director and also hire several more researchers.
